Nova

Good morning! This is Castilume, the daily tech desk, powered by Belink. I'm Nova, here with Atlas. It's Friday, 9 October.

Atlas

Four stories today. Every one is confirmed by at least two outlets, and the links are on the episode page.

Nova

Story one, AI. Apple reportedly plans touchscreen MacBook and iPad Mini launch for this month.

Atlas

According to Engadget: The wait to, literally, get your hands on the tech may almost be over. 2026 is turning into a big year for Apple hardware news. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the company's first touchscreen laptop is expected to debut "on or around" October 27. So, not a 100-percent solid date for a product announcement, but still a more concrete time frame than we've ever had about Apple's long-awaited touchscreen laptop debut.

For a small business here, three questions: can you use it this month, what does it cost, and where does your data go? If the story can't answer those yet, file it and move on.

Nova

Story two, AI. Ukrainian drone attack takes out Russian datacenter.

Atlas

The Register reports: Russian web giant Yandex says one of its cloud availability zones is unavailable due to a drone attack. Yandex is Russia's rough equivalent of Google, and dominates the local market for search, email, and mapping services. The company also operates a cloud computing service whose status page says its ru-central1-b availability zone is down. "The incident was caused by a fire caused by a drone attack on Yandex's data center in Sasovo, which affected part of the Yandex Cloud infrastructure.

Atlas

The test for a business in the region: is it available here, what does it cost, and who sees your data? No clear answers yet means it's one to watch, not one to buy.

Nova

Story three, security. Anthropic launches free AI security scans for open-source projects.

Atlas

Here's what The Verge is reporting. Anthropic's offering to help open-source projects track down security vulnerabilities with a new service called OSS Scanner. The new OSS Scanner service offers vulnerability reports from Anthropic's "strongest models," including Mythos. This will enable faster and more frequent scanning, but means that it is possible reports will be incorrect or invalid. These reports will be generated by our strongest models, including Claude Mythos, to give open-source projects the largest defensive advantage.

The practical step: check whether you run the product named in the reports. If you do, read the vendor advisory and patch. If you don't, no action today.

Nova

Story four, security. FBI disrupts Chinese hacking tools used to breach critical infrastructure.

Atlas

Per BleepingComputer: The seizures targeted infrastructure supporting the two hacking platforms allegedly operated by China-based Integrity Technology Group, Integrity Tech, which U.S. authorities say has contracts with the Chinese government. Department of Justice, the tools were used to scan for vulnerabilities and breach critical infrastructure networks in the United States and other countries. "Integrity Technology Group provided China-linked threat actors with capabilities used to conduct widespread vulnerability scanning and, in some cases, intrusions targeting U.S. and foreign critical infrastructure," said Brett Leatherman, assistant director of the FBI's Cyber Division. MicroScan is a vulnerability-scanning platform developed by Integrity Tech to identify security weaknesses in targeted networks.
