This is Castilume, your tech briefing for Friday, 23 October. I'm Nova. And joining me, as ever, Atlas.
Six stories today. Every one is confirmed by at least two outlets, and the links are on the episode page.
Story one, AI. Amazon unveils Kindle+ subscription, a rebrand with more audiobooks.
According to 9to5Mac: Today Amazon announced that its Kindle Unlimited subscription has been rebranded 'Kindle+' and includes more audiobooks than before. Kindle+ is Amazon's new name for what's historically been called Kindle Unlimited. It's a book subscription service that costs $11.99/month and provides access to "millions of eBooks, as well as thousands of audiobooks, comics, manga, and magazines." Up to 20 digital books, audiobooks, or comics can be borrowed at a time and enjoyed inside the Kindle app across Apple devices like the iPhone and iPad as well as Kindle devices. The upgrade expands the already available audiobook category through the subscription.
Engadget adds: The service still offers a library of books, magazines and comics, and now includes a larger selection of audiobooks.
The test for a business in the region: is it available here, what does it cost, and who sees your data? No clear answers yet means it's one to watch, not one to buy.
Next, from the AI desk. The next-gen Xbox won't cost you $1,800. It can't. Can it.
The Verge reports: Fortune dropped a bombshell report on the future of gaming this week. According to the publication's Microsoft insiders, the next Xbox is projected to cost between $1,200 and $1,800 when it arrives in 2028. My second thought: Microsoft knows people won't pay that much. It couldn't possibly charge that much money if it wants next gen to be a success.

Bottom line for a small team: wait for pricing and real availability before you change any plans.
On to Gulf tech. INVE raises $300,000 from Outliers VC to scale eventtech platform across GCC.
Here's what Wamda is reporting. Saudi Arabia-based eventtech startup INVE has raised $300,000 in a Pre-Seed funding round from Outliers VC, which previously served as the company's first paid business design partner. INVE, a Saudi-based technology company that provides personalised invitations and event-management tools for consumers and businesses, has raised $300,000 in pre-seed funding from Outliers Venture Capital. INVE will use the investment to bring its business platform, launched in August 2026, to more companies and to grow its consumer product, proven with weddings, into the go-to for every occasion. For business hosts, guest information is often scattered between spreadsheets, inboxes, and WhatsApp conversations, so details gathered for one event may get lost when preparations begin for the next gathering.
Also reported by Dealroom, and https://tech-insider.org/.
For businesses in Qatar and the Gulf, watch the practical side: data residency, local support, and who is accountable when something breaks.
Here's number four. Someone Tried to Exploit PHP2Shell 4 Days Before the Vulnerabilities Were Publicly Disclosed.
Per The Hacker News: Amazon's Threat Intelligence team on Wednesday said it detected an attempt to exploit the newly disclosed PHP2Shell vulnerabilities dating back to October 17, 2026, against its MadPot honeypot service, as the flaws come under broad exploitation in the wild following the release of the patches. "The exploit attempt originated from an IP address associated with a commercial anonymization network," CJ Moses, CISO of Amazon Integrated Security, said in a post shared with The Hacker News. "While the vulnerability was under embargo, the targeting of a honeypot from an anonymized IP address suggests the activity was conducted by a threat actor, though it remains unclear how the actor acquired exploit information prior to disclosure." The attempt, Amazon said, was recorded from "103.216.220[.]92," an IP address geolocated to Australia. An Amazon spokesperson told The Hacker News that the activity was largely a one-off probe.
And from BleepingComputer: Security researchers at Amazon Threat Intelligence say attackers began targeting the PHP2Shell flaws four days before security patches were released on Wednesday.
Quick check for your team: do you run anything exposed to the internet that matches this report? If yes, lock it down and patch today. If not, keep an eye on it.
Story five, security. Critical PHP web security flaws spark global alarm as Google, OpenAI and Amazon respond.
According to CNBC Tech: Critical PHP security flaws trigger global warnings as Google, OpenAI and Amazon respond to potential cyber threats. The tech world is racing to implement fixes after the discovery of critical security vulnerabilities in software used to power much of the internet. The software, known as PHP, is an open-source programming language widely used to power websites and web applications. The discovery of the flaws prompted urgent warnings from governments worldwide, while tech giants including Google, OpenAI and Amazon have been involved in efforts to uncover the vulnerabilities, detect potential attacks and protect affected systems.
BBC News adds: AI uncovered long-hidden programming flaws, triggering a rare global cyber-security response.
The takeaway: keep your public-facing systems patched and behind a login. That alone blocks most of what's in stories like this.
Next, from the startups desk. Warhound raises 200 million dollars to engineer war dogs and arm them with Anduril gear.
TechCrunch reports: Warhound, the brainchild of Ben Lamm and Palmer Luckey, emerges from stealth to genetically engineer dogs for military and law enforcement. That idea, on Thursday, announced its emergence from stealth as Warhound, armed with $200 million in funding from investors including In-Q-Tel, Sequoia, and 8VC. The round values the company at $1.2 billion. These are dogs that perform tasks that are dangerous for humans or difficult for machines, like bomb detection, searches, and other specialized operations.
Also reported by NewsBytes and HotAir.
Money raised isn't a product shipped. If you're a buyer, wait until there's something you can try, with a price on it.
