Hello from the Castilume desk. I'm Nova, with Atlas, on Thursday, 15 October. Big one first, then the rest.
Six stories today. Every one is confirmed by at least two outlets, and the links are on the episode page.
Story one, AI. Apple Maps launches Detailed City Experience in Austin, Texas.
According to 9to5Mac: Apple is rolling out its stunning Detailed City Experience in Apple Maps for users in Austin, TX. This marks a robust overhaul of Apple Maps in Austin, similar to what we've seen in other markets like San Francisco, Chicago, and London. The Apple Maps Detailed City Experience revamp adds in-depth details on elevation, buildings, trees, road features, and key city landmarks. In Austin, that includes the Texas Capitol building, Q2 Stadium, the Blanton Museum of Art, the Paramount Theater, and the iconic Congress Avenue Bridge.

Bottom line for a small team: wait for pricing and real availability before you change any plans.
Next, from the AI desk. OpenAI agrees not to use alleged Apple trade secrets amid ongoing lawsuit.
9to5Mac reports: Bloomberg reports that during a hearing today, OpenAI voluntarily agreed not to use Apple's alleged trade secrets while the legal battle between the two companies plays out. Earlier today, OpenAI filed a new motion in the lawsuit in which Apple accuses the company of stealing trade secrets, alleging that a former employee who left OpenAI to return to Apple took more than 100 confidential files related to its unreleased hardware. Soon after, the parties in the lawsuit appeared at a hearing where, as reported by Bloomberg, Judge Edward Davila indicated he was "highly likely" to grant Apple's request for a preliminary injunction against OpenAI. Apple also sought expedited discovery, requesting early access to internal documents, forensic evidence, and employee testimony to support its case for an injunction.

For a small business here, three questions: can you use it this month, what does it cost, and where does your data go? If the story can't answer those yet, file it and move on.
On to Gulf tech. Dubai launches literacy platform to help parents guide children on safe use of AI.
Here's what The National is reporting. Dubai has launched a digital platform designed to help parents guide their children in using artificial intelligence safely and responsibly. The platform, available in Arabic and English, nurtures creativity, protects privacy and strengthens family engagement, rooted in UAE values and culture. GenDubAI was developed collaboratively by the Dubai Centre for Artificial Intelligence, the Community Development Authority and Dubai Future Foundation. The platform is built around "family moments", integrating AI education into everyday life and encouraging meaningful conversations about the technology within the home.

For businesses in Qatar and the Gulf, watch the practical side: data residency, local support, and who is accountable when something breaks.
Here's number four. Microsoft and Japan took down a cybercrime network behind over a billion scam messages.
Per The Verge: Microsoft says it helped dismantle a marketplace for scammers sending phishing messages like those around the world. These messages have been used to target consumers, healthcare organizations, financial institutions, and other businesses in more than 150 countries, generating tens of millions of dollars for their operators. According to Microsoft's report, scammers could buy stolen or fraudulent Microsoft and Google accounts on YAM Store and use the phishing kits to send scam messages. Microsoft says YAM Store also hijacked real organizations' expired web domains and created websites for nonexistent organizations, which it used to get Microsoft accounts it could resell.
And from Dark Reading: A sprawling cybercrime marketplace supplied cloud infrastructure and phishing kits that helped fuel more than 1 billion phishing messages worldwide.
The takeaway: keep your public-facing systems patched and behind a login. That alone blocks most of what's in stories like this.
Story five, security. Cisco Warns of Active Attacks Exploiting New Critical Secure Email Gateway Vulnerability.
According to The Hacker News: Attackers are exploiting a critical flaw in Cisco Secure Email Gateway that lets a sender with no login write files to the appliance's operating system, Cisco said in an advisory on Wednesday. The attacker sends an email with a crafted attachment through the gateway and, if it succeeds, could then run commands as root. The appliance filters an organization's email for spam, malware, and other threats, and only a gateway with the File Reputation service enabled and a Content Scanner Tools package older than version 25.3.0.5525 is vulnerable. The fix has been shipping since September 14 in AsyncOS 15.5.5-014 and 16.5.0-780, the builds Cisco listed as fixed in a hardening release that day, which the company now says covered this flaw.
BleepingComputer adds: Cisco has patched another actively exploited zero-day flaw in its Secure Email Gateway that lets remote unauthenticated attackers execute commands with root privileges.
The practical step: check whether you run the product named in the reports. If you do, read the vendor advisory and patch. If you don't, no action today.
Next, from the startups desk. CedarDB wants one database to handle both transactions and analytics, as AI agents raise the stakes.
TechCrunch reports: Databases have traditionally been designed either for analytical data or for operational data. Databases have traditionally been built for one of two jobs. Analytical databases help businesses spot trends and answer questions, while operational databases store the day-to-day records of transactions, like orders and payments. But the Munich-based database engine CedarDB supports both, and its approach has gained relevance with the rise of agentic AI, its co-founder and CEO Moritz Sichert told TechCrunch.

Money raised isn't a product shipped. If you're a buyer, wait until there's something you can try, with a price on it.
That's your tech day, sorted. I'm Nova.
And I'm Atlas. Catch you on the next Castilume.
