Show notes

1. Google is quietly linking your phone number to other Android accounts Adding a new SIM to your phone links it to all Google accounts, and any new Google accounts you add all inherit your phone number. Android phones have been attaching their SIM's phone number to every signed-in Google account on that device for more than a year. Reported by: Engadget, South Florida Reporter, UA.NEWS.

2. The pros and cons of using an eSIM over a physical SIM card eSIMs are more convenient than physical SIM cards in many ways, but they aren't a 100 percent upgrade. First, you should know there is no quality difference between using an eSIM or physical SIM card. Reported by: Engadget, Emirates 24/7.

3. Talking your language: UAE unveils AI tool designed to master Arabic dialects A cutting-edge Abu Dhabi university has unveiled an Arabic AI tool designed to decode a variety of regional dialects and respond to rapid shifts in language. Jais 3, developed by MBZUAI and Inception42, is an Arabic AI platform capable of transcribing conversations and creating documents across multiple dialects. Reported by: The National, UA.NEWS.

Nova

Good morning! This is Castilume, the daily tech desk, powered by Belink. I'm Nova, here with Atlas. It's Sunday, 25 October.

Atlas

We've got three for you, each checked against at least two outlets. Sources are on the episode page.

Nova

On to AI. Google is quietly linking your phone number to other Android accounts.

Atlas

Here's what Engadget is reporting. Adding a new SIM to your phone links it to all Google accounts, and any new Google accounts you add all inherit your phone number. Android phones have been attaching their SIM's phone number to every signed-in Google account on that device for more than a year. Google's support documentation says that it verifies the number automatically during setup and adds it to every account on the phone, including work and secondary accounts. According to Google, verification enables features like account recovery and RCS messaging, but the company doesn't explain why the number needs to be added to every account.

For a small business here, three questions: can you use it this month, what does it cost, and where does your data go? If the story can't answer those yet, file it and move on.

Nova

Here's number two. The pros and cons of using an eSIM over a physical SIM card.

Atlas

Per Engadget: eSIMs are more convenient than physical SIM cards in many ways, but they aren't a 100 percent upgrade. First, you should know there is no quality difference between using an eSIM or physical SIM card. The difference between the two is how you activate and move your cellular service. Both identify your subscription to a mobile network and feature the same reception and data speed.

Atlas

The test for a business in the region: is it available here, what does it cost, and who sees your data? No clear answers yet means it's one to watch, not one to buy.

Nova

Story three, Gulf tech. Talking your language: UAE unveils AI tool designed to master Arabic dialects.

Atlas

According to The National: A cutting-edge Abu Dhabi university has unveiled an Arabic AI tool designed to decode a variety of regional dialects and respond to rapid shifts in language. Jais 3, developed by MBZUAI and Inception42, is an Arabic AI platform capable of transcribing conversations and creating documents across multiple dialects. Jais Speech recognises Modern Standard Arabic and dialects from 19 Arab countries, handling code-switching between Arabic, English and French. The platform's seven billion and 32 billion-parameter models achieved the highest average Arabic scores among open models of comparable sizes.

For businesses in Qatar and the Gulf, watch the practical side: data residency, local support, and who is accountable when something breaks.

Nova

That's your tech day, sorted. I'm Nova.
